Overview

External researchers and partners entering the Birck Nanotechnology Center encountered substantial facility onboarding bottlenecks.

The existing orientation relied on a passive, static slide deck that learners read independently, with no active engagement or knowledge verification.

Delays in completing orientation postponed badge issuance, safety clearances, and lab access, reducing overall facility throughput.

Role:
Lead Instructional Designer

Core Skills:

  • Brightspace LMS
  • SME Collaboration
  • Interactive Learning Design
  • Process Optimization

Design Solution

SME Collaboration & Content Restructuring

Partnered directly with facility subject matter experts to identify procedural pain points and eliminate redundant steps.

LMS Architecture in Brightspace

Converted the passive slide deck into structured, modular Brightspace pages featuring intuitive navigation and clear “gates” to monitor completion.

Active Learning & Knowledge Checks

Integrated interactive elements and inline comprehension checkpoints to ensure external users understood lab procedures and compliance standards prior to physical entry.

Outcome & Impact

  • Turnaround Reduction: Slashed the onboarding timeline from over one month in some cases to approximately one week, accelerating researcher facility access and saving stakeholders time and money.
  • Flawless Initial Rollout: Successfully launched in July 2026, onboarding over 30 initial external users with zero technical incidents in course completion.
  • Scalable Compliance: Provided a repeatable, self-paced framework that reduced in-person training time required, freeing up staff for other duties.
